As a Creative Writing minor, my writing has been a vital realm of my work here at Elon. During the process of creating my portfolio, I felt compelled to showcase my writing in a way that also incorporated some aspects of my design skills. This zine, “Pink and Pretty”, is a project that includes brief pieces of poetry detailing the relationship between time and femininity, and the way in which I perceive that relationship to have significant impacts in my life. This zine is a product of my Contemporary Writers class, during which we were urged to experiment with different styles of writing, and given free reign to write in ways that truly resonate with us.
In terms of design, I tried to lean into the traditional "zine" spirit of piecing whatever together and ignoring the rules. However, I utilized color and layout in a way that I hoped would emphasize and deepen the message conveyed by the writing itself, and not in a way that overwhelmed it. While this piece doesn’t necessarily present the absolute peak of my design capabilities, it is a merging of my writing, and a few key design aspects, which ultimately come together and aid in expressing my personal truth.
